🧠Mini lección 9: “Used to” vs “Would” para hablar de hábitos pasados
Hoy vamos a hablar del verbo «Used to» vs «Would». En inglés, used to y would se usan para hablar de hábitos o situaciones del pasado que ya no ocurren, pero no significan exactamente lo mismo.
✔ Used to
Se usa para:
- Hábitos pasados
- Situaciones o estados que eran verdad antes, pero ya no lo son
Estructura:
Subject + used to + verb
Ejemplos:
- I used to wake up early when I worked at that company.
- She used to have long hair, but now it’s short.
- We used to go to the beach every summer.
- He used to drink coffee every morning.
- They used to live in a small apartment.
- I used to be afraid of spiders when I was a kid.
- My parents used to take us to the countryside every weekend.
- I used to read a lot of books as a teenager.
- She used to play the piano, but she doesn’t anymore.
- We used to eat pizza every Friday.
👉 Importante: used to sí puede usarse con verbos de estado (be, have, like, live…).
✔ Would
Se usa solo para hábitos repetidos en el pasado, normalmente cuando contamos historias o recordamos rutinas.
Ejemplos:
- When we were children, we would play hide and seek after school.
- Every Christmas, my family would travel to the mountains.
- On Sundays, my grandparents would take us for a walk in the park.
- During summer holidays, I would swim in the lake all day.
- Whenever it rained, we would stay inside and watch movies.
- When I was at university, I would study until very late.
- At that job, he would always help his teammates.
- Every morning, she would make breakfast before going to work.
- As a child, I would visit my aunt every summer.
- We would always laugh at his stories.
🚫 No se usa con estados:
- ❌ I would live in Madrid
- ✅ I used to live in Madrid

A: Yes, I used to play basketball.
Q: What would you do after school?
A: I would do my homework and then watch TV.
